 | General: Lithgow Sewerage Treated As Drinking Water |
Labrat writes "Our drinking water supply is Warragamba Dam and we have effluent coming into that dam from Lithgow sewerage treatment plant. The ongoing discharge of conventionally treated waste water that was never meant for drinking and not prepared in a way that's supposed to be suitable for drinking into our rivers and dams raises concern about levels of bacteria and virus outbreaks...
Poorly treated sewerage containing hormones excreted in everyones urine
and the effect of industrial chemicals has epidemiological studies
showing a decrease in male sperm count around the world over the last
two decades questioning whether endocrine disrupting chemicals, eg:
hormones are responsible. Proposals for drinking recylced waste water has microbiologists and town planners being quite vocal in their opposition due to the risk of passing contaminents onto humans. The machinery employed to treat waste water is subject to malfunction through normal wear and tear and there is the possibility of very toxic substances making it past supposed safeguards.
A recent ABC Radio National interview with Dr Stuart Khan, who is a water researcher in the Environmental Engineering Department at the University of NSW has been transcribed in his blog titled :"Water Recycling in Australia" the main topic of discussion was potable water recycling and the full transcipt of that interview which can be viewed at the following:
